Von den Einflüsterungen seines intriganten Fähnrichs geblendet, glaubt General Othello, dass ihn seine ihm treu ergebene Ehefrau mit seinem Leutnant betrügt. Als der Fähnrich seinem General ein fingiertes Beweisstück für den Ehebruch präsentiert, bringt der Rasende seine große Liebe eigenhändig um. Er erkennt jedoch seinen Fehler und begeht Selbstmord. Eine eigenwillige Version des Shakespeare-Dramas um den Gattin-meuchelnden Mohren. Unter relativ schlechten Drehbedingungen landete Welles im organisatorischen Chaos: vier Jahre Entstehungs- bzw. Drehzeit, weil u.a. die Schauspieler nur zeitweilig verfügbar waren, was mehrere Umbesetzungen zur Folge hatte. Trotzdem gelangen ihm düstere Schwarz-Weißbilder und eindrucksvolle Schattenspiele von atemberaubender Kraft. Der zwischen 1948 und 1952 in Marokko entstandene Film blieb wie einige andere Werke von Welles auch ein Fragment. Immer wieder musste Welles aus finanziellen Gründen pausieren und bei anderen Regisseuren "schauspielern", um weitermachen zu können. Während der Entstehungszeit von "Othello" stand er als Cesare Borgia in Henry Kings Film "In den Klauen der Borgia", als Titelheld in "Graf Cagliostro", vor allem aber als Harry Lime in Carol Reeds Meisterwerk "Der dritte Mann" vor der Kamera.
