During his many years as a senior executive at Starbucks, Howard Behar helped establish the Starbucks culture, which stresses people over profits. He coached hundreds of leaders at every level and helped the company grow into a world-renowned brand. Now he reveals the ten principles that guided his leadership, and not one of them is about coffee. Behar shows that if you think of your staff as people (not labor costs) they will achieve amazing results. He discusses the importance of building trust, telling hard truths, thinking independently, and more. And he shares inside stories of key turning points for Starbucks, as it fought to hang on to its culture while growing exponentially

The New CSR Collaborative Social Responsibility ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
If a company searches out connections with other organizations, it will likely achieve greater awareness of its role in society-and that benefits everyone. This CNBC program offers fascinating examples, from partnering with non-profits to assisting with medical outreach to helping create sustainable supply chains. Viewers learn how the public-private partnership GAVI was formed to improve access to immunization and how Sun Chips are made in the world's largest solar-powered factory. Expertise comes from Jonathan Greenblatt, former CEO of GOOD Worldwide; Kellie McElhaney, professor at the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley; Mohammed Valli Moosa, president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and South Africa's former Minister of Environmental Affairs; Alice Albright, EVP and Chief Financial Investment Officer of the GAVI Alliance; Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks; and David Kepler, CIO of Dow Chemicals

Ocean Surface Wave Optical Roughness - Innovative Measurement and Modeling ( Book )
3 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Nonlinear interfacial roughness elements - sharp crested waves, breaking waves as well as the foam, subsurface bubbles and spray they produce, contribute substantially to the distortion of the optical transmission through the air-sea interface. These common surface roughness features occur on a wide range of length scales, from the dominant sea state down to capillary waves. Wave breaking signatures range from large whitecaps with their residual passive foam, down to the ubiquitous centimeter scale microscale breakers that do not entrain air. There is substantial complexity in the local wind-driven sea surface roughness microstructure, as is evident in the close range image shown in Figure 1. Traditional descriptors of sea surface roughness are scale-integrated statistical properties, such as significant wave height, mean squared slope (e.g. Cox and Munk, 1954) and breaking probability (e.g. Holthuijsen and Herbers, 1986). Subsequently, spectral characterisations of wave height, slope and curvature have been measured, providing a scale resolution into Fourier modes for these geometrical sea roughness parameters. More recently, measurements of whitecap crest length spectral density (e.g. Phillips et al, 2001, Gemmrich et al., 2008) and microscale breaker crest length spectral density (e.g. Jessup and Phadnis, 2005) have been reported
Ascender II - Knowledge-Directed Image Understanding for Site Reconstruction by Allen Hanson ( )
3 editions published between 1999 and 2001 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Ascender 2 system was designed to perform three dimensional reconstruction of cultural objects (primarily buildings) from multiple aerial images. It is based on the premise that cooperative redundant reconstruction algorithms will succeed where individual algorithms fail and that a major task for a vision system is deciding which algorithm to apply to what data (and when). Control is based on Bayesian networks and utility theory is used to compute the marginal value of information for alternative operators and to select the one with the highest return. Two reconstruction algorithms are described that, along with other techniques, form the repertoire of algorithms. One algorithm reconstructs a 3-dimensional model of the scene using the differential geometry of scene surfaces to index into a set of model surfaces. A robust surface optimization converges on the model and parameters that most closely describe the data. After the best-fit surface has been determined, an outlier analysis phase searches for substructures that are recursively processed. The second algorithm recovers geometric structure from SAR and IFSAR data. The presence of noise missing data and poorly understood radar artifacts in such images necessitates the use of robust and context-sensitive technique. The algorithm exploits knowledge about the geometric structure of buildings and how this geometry interacts with the sensor

Equipment in Support for Polarimetric Imaging ( Book )
2 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The wind-driven sea surface is characterized by wind waves with a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Small waves, with millimeter to centimeter wavelengths, ride on the longer waves and play a crucial role in fundamental interfacial geophysical processes. These include wind stress, air-sea gas exchange, and optical transmission through the surface, microwave backscatter, amongst others. As well, this small-scale roughness underpins many marine remote sensing technologies, such as scatterometry, altimetry and synthetic aperture radar. These satellite sensors are the primary data sources of winds and waves over the planet's oceans. However, current knowledge of the sea surface roughness is incomplete, especially at these shorter scales, which degrades the accuracy of the satellite data products. To improve both sensor and modeling accuracy for a wide range of air-sea interfacial processes, a more detailed description of the small-scale roughness is needed. As these scales have small amplitudes, but finite steepness, measuring their slope properties is intrinsically well-suited to their characterization
