Die Büchse der Pandora Variationen auf das Thema Frank Wedekinds Lulu = Pandora's box : variations on the theme of Frank Wedekind's Lulu by G. W Pabst( Visual )

18 editions published between 1928 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 1,083 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Starring the remarkable American silent film actress Louise Brooks, Pandora's Box is the story of Lulu, a femme fatale, who, after leaving a path of destruction in her wake, is murdered by Jack the Ripper. Banned by Hitler, Pabst's silent melodrama captured the laissez faire sexual mores of Weimar Republic Germany. Prostitution, same sex relationships and murder provide the background for an unforgettable performance by Louise Brooks. The 23 year old Brooks broke her contract with Paramount in order to work with Pabst in Germany and Pabst made two films with her before she returned to the United States. Although her performance in Pandora's Box is now considered to be one of the great silent screen performances, Louise Brooks' acting career ended with the advent of sound, (possibly due to her snub of Paramount). Pabst would go on making films until his health failed in 1956
Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse by Fritz Lang( Visual )

14 editions published between 1932 and 2016 in German and held by 561 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Locked away in an asylum for a decade and teetering between life and death, the criminal mastermind Doctor Mabuse (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) has scribbled his last will and testament: a manifesto establishing a future empire of crime. When the document's nefarious writings start leading to terrifying parallels in reality, it's up to Berlin's star detective, Inspector Lohmann (Otto Wernicke, reprising his role from M) to connect the most fragmented, maddening clues in a case unlike any other. A sequel to his enormously successful silent film Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler, Fritz Lang's The Testament of Dr. Mabuse reunites the director with the character that had effectively launched his career. Lang put slogans and ideas expounded by the Nazis into the mouth of a madman, warning his audience of an imminent menace, which was soon to become a reality. Nazi Minister of Information Joseph Goebbels saw the film as an instruction manual for terrorist action against the government and banned it for "endangering public order and security". A landmark of mystery and suspense for countless espionage and noir thrillers to come, this is the complete, uncut original director's version in a stunning new transfer

A dashing thief called Mack the Knife gets away with robbery on a daily basis until he marries Polly Peachum, daughter of the king of the beggars. When the outraged king sends a force of crooked cops after Mack, the bandit must run for his life.
