An adaptation of three ironic short stories by Guy de Maupassant ostensibly linked by a common theme: the paradoxical deceptions of pleasure. The first story, Le Masque, contrasts pleasure and old age in the story of an old man so addicted to dancing that he wears a mask to disguise his age. The second story, Le Modele, opposes pleasure and marriage. A young painter has an affair with his model, which after her attempted suicide ends with their marriage. The third, La Maison Tellier, is virtually a short feature. Pleasure and purity are opposed as the inmates of a city brothel spend a day in the country attending the first communion of the madame's niece

Charming rogue Fanfan flits from one adventure to the other after evading marriage by joining the army in the midst of the Seven Years' War. He's motivated less by patriotism than by a consultation with Adeline, a voluptuous phony fortuneteller who promises that he will find glory in the army, even win the hand of King Louis XV's daughter. Herself the daughter of a recruiting sergeant, Adeline is a charlatan, but the irrepressible Fanfan sets about fulfilling his "destiny," even as his would-be soothsayer finds herself falling in love with him. Flirting and fighting, trouble reliably finds Fanfan, who just as reliably evades it

La ronde by Max Ophuls ( Visual )
12 editions published between 1950 and 2009 in French and Undetermined and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Set in Vienna 1900; this bitter-sweet comedy of sexual manners is based on a play which was apparently a metaphor for the transmission of venereal disease. In Ophuls' hands, however, cynicism is transmuted into irony as the tracking and circling camera underlines the circularity of desire and the sad futility of the elegant characters unable to escape from the trap of time. Only the director's alter-ego, the narrator, is granted the freedom to move through time and shape his identity. Ophuls' foregrounding of artifice only serves, in the words of Philip Kemp, to further open the gap between 'the ideal of love and its transient reality'
