La grande illusion by Jean Renoir( Visual )

35 editions published between 1937 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 444 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Renoir's meditation on friendship and chivalry in the midst of Europe's first mechanized war, was based on his own experiences as a French combat pilot and a prisoner of war. Renoir wrote the film as Europe slid towards World War II. Three French pilots, shot down during World War I, are drawn together during an escape attempt, despite different class backgrounds. Captain de Boeldieu is a wealthy aristocrat; Lieutenant Maréchal a self assured mechanic; and Rosenthal, a prosperous banker. Together they develop a daring plan to escape their imprisonment in a Bavarian castle. While escaping, Captain de Boeldieu is shot by the camp commander, but Marechal and Rosenthal manage to get away and eventually make their way back to France. When it was released, the film received an Academy Award as well as a prize at the Venice Film Festival, but due to the film's pacifist stance, it was banned in Germany and Italy

Le plaisir by Max Ophuls( Visual )

6 editions published between 1951 and 2009 in French and English and held by 391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An adaptation of three ironic short stories by Guy de Maupassant ostensibly linked by a common theme: the paradoxical deceptions of pleasure. The first story, Le Masque, contrasts pleasure and old age in the story of an old man so addicted to dancing that he wears a mask to disguise his age. The second story, Le Modele, opposes pleasure and marriage. A young painter has an affair with his model, which after her attempted suicide ends with their marriage. The third, La Maison Tellier, is virtually a short feature. Pleasure and purity are opposed as the inmates of a city brothel spend a day in the country attending the first communion of the madame's niece

Charming rogue Fanfan flits from one adventure to the other after evading marriage by joining the army in the midst of the Seven Years' War. Herself the daughter of a recruiting sergeant, Adeline is a charlatan, but the irrepressible Fanfan sets about fulfilling his "destiny," even as his would-be soothsayer finds herself falling in love with him. Flirting and fighting, trouble reliably finds Fanfan, who just as reliably evades it

Lola Montez( Visual )

5 editions published between 1955 and 1991 in German and Undetermined and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Cahiers du cinéma critics were almost alone in championing Max Ophuls's commercially disastrous last film. Time has validated them. Ophuls did some of their critical work for them in this self-reflexive film in which narrative is first de- and then beautifully reconstructed. The film recounts in flashbacks the life of the courtesan Lola Montez (Martine Carol), who ended her days as a circus attraction in a series of gaudy tableaux depicting her scandalous life. Peter Ustinov, extraordinary in the role of the ringmaster, invites the audience to ask 'the most indelicate questions' of this 'monster of cruelty with the eyes of an angel.' She is the cinema's femme fatale come full circle; she is the artist himself, who similarly laid himself open with this film. The flashback also is stripped of contrivance: it becomes pure emotion, the past of a woman who has no present. This is further distilled in the wild colors and sets through which the camera roams, free of any allegiance to narrative space"--Judy Bloch. Pacific Film Archive program note
