The kinetics of the inhibition of the autoxidation of tetralin by 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methylphenol, phenol, and 4-methoxyphenol have been investigated at 65 C. The highly hindered 2,6-dit-butyl-4-methoxyphenol follows simple first order kinetics and exhibits a normal deuterium isotope effect. The kinetics with phenol are complicated by the fact that the phenoxy radical can abstract a hydrogen atom from both tetralin and its hydroperoxide. This leads to oxidation rates which are inversely proportional to the square root of the phenol concentration. The deuterium isotope effect has about the value to be expected in view of this square root relation. The kinetics with 4-methoxyphenol result from chain transfer and from chain termination by coupling of 4-methoxyphenoxy radicals. The isotope effect varies between zero and a value that approaches the upper limit of about 10 at low inhibitor concentrations. (Author)

The limiting rate of oxidation of tetralin catalyzed by cobalt, manganese, and copper decanoates has been measured in 12 solvents at 65 C. This rate is generally determined by the kinetic condition that the hydroperoxide reaches a steady-state concentration but the experimental rates are smaller than expected in some solvents. Both cobalt and manganese are able to terminate reaction chains and they therefore act as inhibitors of the oxidation at high concentrations. The ratio of the propagation rate constant to the square root of the termination rate constant for the oxidation of tetralin in acetic acid solution is given. (Author)

Methods for inhibiting the autoxidation of organic substrates are reviewed. Antioxidants can be divided into two broad groups according to whether they reduce the rate of chain initiation (preventive antioxidants) or interfere with the normal propagation process by reacting with free radicals (chain-breaking antioxidants). Preventive antioxidants can be subdivided into peroxide decomposers, metal ion deactivators, and ultraviolet light deactivators. Chain-breaking antioxidants can be subdivided according to whether they add, donate hydrogen, or donate an electron to the chain-propagating radicals. The detailed mechanisms by which these various classes of antioxidants inhibit oxidation are discussed. (Author)

Four 3,4-dihydro-3-ortho-alkylphenyl-2H-1,3-benzoxazines have been synthesized. Enthalpies and entropies of activation for rotation about the phenyl-nitrogen bond have been calculated from the temperature dependence of the proton resonance spectra for the o-isopropyl and o-t-butyl derivatives. The barrier to rotation for the o-methyl and 2,6-dimethyl derivatives was too low to be measured by this procedure. (Author)
