The effects of two small-group models of active teaching and active learning on sixth-grade mathematics achievement by DeWayne A Mason( )

3 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing primarily from Good, Grouws, and Ebmeier's (1983) active mathematics teaching program, two small-group models of active teaching and active learning were developed for experimental testing in sixth-grade mathematics classrooms. It was hypothesized that the models--a whole-class ad hoc model (WC AH) and a two-group model--would have differential effects on mathematics achievement and that the order of effect would be WC AH $>$ two group $>$ control group. After matching on the basis of aptitude and achievement (APT/ACH) measures, nine schools from a midwestern school district were randomly assigned to treatment conditions. All sixth-grade teachers ($N$ = 27) and their mathematics students ($N$ = 612) participated in the study. Nineteen teachers received training on the models ($N$ = 10 for WC AH and $N$ = 9 for two-group) and eight teachers served as controls. To measure treatment implementation, 135 observations of the 27 teachers (five per teacher) were completed. Analysis-of-variance (ANOVA) procedures were used to analyze the statistical properties of a two-way factorial after-only design with nested factors. An experimenter-constructed test based on the target district's curriculum served as the dependent measure; the test measured achievement in the areas of computation, concepts, problem solving, and mental mathematics. Results included: (1) high rates of implementation by experimental-treatments; (2) significant main effects and interactions; (3) significantly higher overall achievement by WC AH students than two-group-model and control-group students; and (4) significantly higher achievement by WC AH students in the areas of computation, concepts, and mental mathematics than two-group-model and control-group students
