The integration process between Eastern and Western Europe by Daniel Piazolo ( Book )
9 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 200 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The integration of the Central and Eastern European transition countries into the European Union is an exciting economic policy issues. This book provides a detailed analysis of the economic effects which EU integration has on accession countries. It shows that these countries have already managed to fully remove the anti-trade bias with the EU that existed before the fall of the Iron Curtain. Benefits from further integration into the EU could result in particular from the fact that full membership in the European Community will increase the credibility of government policy in accession countries. The study explores in depth how these credibility effects can be quantified. The author develops a novel approach to model the transformation process within a dynamic computable general equilibrium framework. Furthermore, he estimates the potential income and welfare effects of EU integration for Poland, the largest transition country with EU candidate status

The rapid diffusion of the internet and electronic commerce changes the way business and international trade take place. The new economy poses new challenges to the international and European regulatory framework, since small distortions due to differing sets of regulations and taxation between countries might grow to non-negligible dimensions. This paper examines the necessary reforms of the multilateral framework concerning standards, policy coordination and taxation and stresses that the new economy reinforces the need for consistent, transparent, non-discriminatory, simple and enforceable rules. Furthermore, strategies to overcome the digital divide between countries are set out
The Transatlantic Free Trade Area. Fuelling Trade Discrimination or Global Liberalization? by Horst Siebert ( )
4 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This article discusses the economic cases for and against a Transatlantic free trade area (TAFTA) between the United States and the European Union. It analyses the alternatives to TAFTA and concludes by arguing in favour of a multilateral approach to liberalisation between the United States and the EU. It deals with the following questions: is TAFTA a threat to the WTO approach of multilateralism or a supplementary approach?; can TAFTA open up a route to universal free trade that is not yet available through the WTO?; can TAFTA accelerate global liberalisation?; if a cost/benefit analysis comes to the conclusion that TAFTA is not the right approach, could the willingness to liberalise - as expressed in promoting TAFTA - be integrated into the multilateral context?--SCAD summary
