3 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 46 libraries worldwide Stella Nekati-Chiweshe, of the Shona people of Zimbabwe, is a musical genius, a virtuoso of the mbira - the African "thumb piano" used in the invocation of the ancestral spirits in Shona religious rituals. This striking, ageless woman, who had to fight to gain access to teachings traditionally reserved for men, speaks of her struggle to learn. Then, seated among the rock formations of Dumboshawa, dressed in the traditional Shona costume, she sings and plays hypnotic music drawn from some perfect, secret source. Images of traditional hut painting by Othelia Ngwena and "Big Boy" Sibanda, aspects of the stone structures of great Zimbabwe and ancient rock paintings accompany Stella's hauntingly evocative music.
