The sun's influence on climate by Joanna D Haigh( Book )

11 editions published in 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Earth's climate system depends entirely on the Sun for its energy. Solar radiation warms the atmosphere and is fundamental to atmospheric composition, while the distribution of solar heating across the planet produces global wind patterns and contributes to the formation of clouds, storms, and rainfall. The Sun's Influence on Climate provides an unparalleled introduction to this vitally important relationship. This accessible primer covers the basic properties of the Earth's climate system, the structure and behavior of the Sun, and the absorption of solar radiation in the atmosphere. It explains how solar activity varies and how these variations affect the Earth's environment, from long-term paleoclimate effects to century timescales in the context of human-induced climate change, and from signals of the 11-year sunspot cycle to the impacts of solar emissions on space weather in our planet's upper atmosphere. Written by two of the leading authorities on the subject, The Sun's Influence on Climate is an essential primer for students and nonspecialists alike"--
The sun, solar analogs and the climate by Joanna D Haigh( Book )

20 editions published between 2005 and 2010 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents the lectures notes of the 34th Saas-Fee Advanced Course "The Sun, Solar Analogs and the Climate" given by leading scientists in the field. Emphasis is on the observed variability of the Sun and the present understanding of the variability's origin as well as its impact on the Earth's climate. The solar variability is then studied in the broader context of solar-type stars, allowing for better understanding of the solar-activity cycle and the magnetic activity in general. This book provides an accessible and up-to-date introduction to the field for graduate students and serves as modern source of reference for active researchers in this field

30-second meteorology : the 50 most significant events and phenomena, each explained in half a minute( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"If you only have 30 seconds, there is time -- using this book -- to make sense of the science behind the seeming vagaries of the weather, the controversies, predictions and forecasts for climate change that shape our day-to-day experiences of the great outdoors. Ever since Aristotle first tried to explain the forces that seem to fall from the heavens, meteorology has opened up the study of weather, and caused disputes over the reasons why seasons change, where precipitation falls, why winds blow and when the sun shines. From halcyon days to hurricanes, super cells to silver linings, global warming to giant hailstones, here is the ultimate guide to a near universal preoccupation: what's the weather like?"--Publisher description

Solar variability and climate : proceedings of an ISSI Workshop, 28 June-2 July 1999, Bern, Switzerland by E Friis-Christensen( Book )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The variability of the sun is well established, as well as that of the Earth's climate. To what extent the two are connected, in the sense that solar variability drives climate, is the subject of considerable research and, in some cases, controversy. This volume is aimed at obtaining an overview of the current knowledge of the variability of the Sun and of the Earth's climate, and of their possible connections. It is the collection of the introductory and contributed papers presented at an ISSI workshop, supplemented by a summary of the discussion sessions and a workshop, thus giving a coherent overview while still conveying the lively spirit that prevailed at the workshop. The volume is intended to provide the active researcher with an up-to-date status report while at the same time serving the advanced graduate student with introductory material into this field of research
