The unheard truth : poverty and human rights by Irene Khan( Book )
3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 958 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Despite economic growth in almost every corner of the world over the last decade, billions of people still live in poverty. Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan claims that economic analyses do not provide a full picture and economic solutions alone cannot end the problems of poverty. In an argument enriched with her personal experiences and case studies from around the world, Khan sees poverty as the world's worst human rights crisis because it traps people in a vicious cycle of deprivation, insecurity, exclusion, and voicelessness. She argues that the foremost challenge is the empowerment of poor people, and makes a passionate and urgent plea for action to uphold human rights in the fight to end poverty."--BOOK JACKET
The media and the Rwanda genocide by Allan Thompson( Book )
7 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 289 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"It was the French philosopher, Voltaire, who wrote: 'We owe respect to the living; to the dead we owe only truth.' In the case of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the news media accomplished neither of Voltaire's admonitions. Confronted by Rwanda's horrors, Western news media for the most part turned away, then muddled the story when they did pay attention. And hate media organs in Rwanda--through their journalists, broadcasters and media executives--played an instrumental role in laying the groundwork for genocide, then actively participated in the extermination campaign. On the eve of the tenth anniversary of the Rwanda genocide, the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University in Ottawa hosted a one-day symposium on 13 March 2004, entitled 'The Media and the Rwanda Genocide.' The symposium examined in tandem the role of both the international media and Rwanda's domestic news organizations in the cataclysmic events of 1994. The Carleton symposium brought together for the first time an international collection of experts as well as some of the actors from the Rwandan drama; it also inspired this collection of papers. Many of the contributions found here are based on papers delivered at the Carleton event, but others were commissioned or have been reprinted here because of their valuable contribution to the debate. The symposium was made possible by generous contributions from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Government of Canada, through the Global Issues Bureau of the Foreign Affairs department and the Canadian International Development Agency. The IDRC has also played a key role in the publication of this collection; it continues to support Carleton's efforts to build a Media and Genocide Archive and to establish a partnership with the School of Journalism and Communication at the National University of Rwanda in Butare through a project called The Rwanda Initiative."--Excerpted from preface

In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa, [this book] evaluates what has been achieved since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio. Ten years ago, the leaders of the world produced a plan to begin creating a sustainable global economy, one that meets human needs while protecting and restoring the natural environment. How much progress has the world made toward that goal? With [the book] as your guide, you will learn about the problems facing the delegates in Johannesburg as they try to answer this question -from today's severe inequalities of wealth and income (1.2 billion people live on 1 [dollar] a day or less) to environmental threats such as climate change, growing numbers of tourists in fragile areas, and the proliferation of toxic chemicals. The authors also shed light on the possibilities for change and how existing technologies and resources can help solve many of our most pressing problems. Using renewables like wind power, the energy economy can be converted from oil to hydrogen. Poor farmers can grow more food by taking advantage of "free" biological services, like nitrogen-fixing plants and beneficial insects. And women can have fewer children when they have a chance to get an education and to act on their own decisions on when to have children. [The book] spells out priorities for the Johannesburg Summit in seven key areas: agriculture, energy policy and climate change, chemicals, international tourism, population growth, resource-based conflicts, and global governance. Decisions made today can make all the difference in our efforts to build a more stable and secure world in the future.-- From back cover

4 editions published in 2005 in French and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
