Originally released in 1972, Painters Painting is the definitive documentary on the New York School of painters from 1940-1970. Interviews by Emile de Antonio, a close friend to many New York painters who later went on to become famous. He filmed and interviewed the artists informally in their studios. Artists included are Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, Larry Poons, Phillip Pavia, and Hans Hoffman

This documentary was filmed at a gathering of artists and collectors at the Parke-Bernet Galleries to view the post-1945 art, including paintings, sculpture, furniture and other objects, collected by Robert and Ethel Scull. It shows the Gallery's preparation for an auction of the Scull Collection and scenes from the auction which garnered nearly 2 1/4 million dollars for pop art that had been generally scorned by the art world before the 1970s
