Ecological condition of coastal ocean waters within Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, 2008 ( )
2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This document presents the results of an assessment of ecological condition and potential stressor impacts in coastal-ocean waters of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS), based on sampling conducted in June 2008. The project was a collaborative effort by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It represents one of a series of studies, similar in protocol and design to EPA's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) and subsequent National Coastal Assessment (NCA), which extend these prior efforts in estuaries and inland waters out to the coastal shelf, from navigable depths along the shoreline seaward to the shelf break (approximate 100 m depth contour). Ecological assessments in National Marine Sanctuaries provide a basis for comparing conditions in these protected areas to surrounding non-sanctuary waters"--Preface
Environmental and aesthetic impacts of small docks and piers workshop report : developing a science-based decision support tool for small dock management, phase 1, status of the science by Ruth Kelty ( )
1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Provides a critical synthesis of potential consequences of the construction, presence, and use of small docks and piers on the coastal environment. Shading, contamination, and boating associated with docks are discussed, as well as navigation, aesthetic, and quality of life issues. The workshop, which focused on the status of the science, is the first of a series designed to support the development of a science-based decision support tool for small dock management

A baseline assessment of the ecological resources of Jobos Bay, Puerto Rico ( )
2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This report is organized into six chapters that represent a suite of interrelated studies. Chapter 1 provides a short introduction to Jobos Bay, including the land use and hydrology of the watershed. Chapter 2 is focused on benthic mapping and provides the methods and results of newly created benthic maps for Jobos Bay and the surrounding coral reef ecosystem. Chapter 3 presents the results of new surveys of fish, marine debris, and reef communities of the system. Chapter 4 is focused on the distribution of chemical contaminants in sediments within the Bay and corals outside of the Bay. Chapter 5 focuses on quantifying nutrient and pesticide concentrations in the surface waters at the Reserve's System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) sites. Chapter 6 is a brief summary discussion that highlights key findings of the entire suite of studies"--Executive summary

Ecological forecasting new tools for coastal and marine ecosystem management ( )
2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Policy makers, natural resource managers, regulators, and the public often call on scientists to estimate the potential ecological changes caused by both natural and human-induced stresses, and to determine how those changes will impact people and the environment. To develop forecasts of ecological changes we need to: 1) increase to understanding of ecosystem composition, structure and functioning, 2) expand ecosystem monitoring and apply advanced scientific information to make these complex data widely available, and 3) develop and improve forecast and interpretative tools that use the scientific bases to assess the results of management and science policy actions."
