// Autor: Landesbibliothek Coburg, Dr. Silvia Pfister // Datum: 2016

Von den Jüden vnd jren Lügen by Martin Luther( Book )

6 editions published in 1543 in German and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Martin Luther originally recommend a tolerant treatment of the Jews, believing that through his teaching they would eventually convert to Christianity. As the Jews did not convert over time, Martin Luther became increasingly hostile toward them. His two works, "Von den Juden und ihren Lügen" (From the Jews and their Lies) and "Vom Shem Hamphoras" (On the Shem Hamephoras or "The Ineffable Name") were openly antisemitic. "Repeating the accusations and invective of medieval anti-Jewish polemics and making use of the works of the apostates Antonius Margaritha and Bernhard Ziegler, he subject[ed] the Jews to a torrent of vile abuse, calling them 'venomous and virulent, ' 'thieves and brigands, ' and 'disgusting vermin.'" He also made practical suggestions for the Jews, such as forced labor to outright banishment. His recommendations were followed by Protestant leaders of the time, resulting in "the expulsion of the Jews from Saxony in 1543 and the hostile 'Judenordnung' of Landgrave Philip of Hesse in the same year."--Encyclopaedia Judaica
