Cache-memory interfaces in compressed memory systems by Caroline D Benveniste( Book )

3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "We consider a number of cache/memory hierarchy design issues in systems with compressed random access memories (C-RAMs), in which compression and decompression occur automatically to and from main memory. Using a C-RAM as main memory, segments of main memory are stored in a compressed format, and dynamically decompressed to handle cache misses at the next higher level of memory. Design of main memory directory structures and storage allocation methods in such systems are described elsewhere; here we focus on issues related to cache-memory interfaces. In particular, if the cache line size (of the cache or caches to which main memory data is transferred) is different than the size of the unit of compression in main memory, bandwidth and latency problems can occur. Another issue is that of guaranteed forward progress, that is ensuring that modified lines can be written to the compressed main memory so that the system can continue operation even if overall compression deteriorates. We study several approaches for solving these problems, using trace-driven analysis to evaluate alternatives."
On optimistic methods for concurrency control by H. T Kung( Book )

4 editions published in 1979 in English and Undetermined and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most current approaches to concurrency control in database systems rely on locking of a data objects as a control mechanism. In this paper, two families of non-locking concurrency controls are presented. The methods used are ('optimistic' in the sense that rely mainly on transaction backup as a control mechanism, 'hoping' that conflicts between transactions will not occur. Applications where these methods should be more efficient than locking are discussed. (Author)

Design and analysis of internal organizations for compressed random access memories by Peter, A Franaszek( Book )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "The design of a compressed random access memory (C-RAM) is considered. Using a C-RAM at the lowest level of a system's main memory hierarchy, cache lines are stored in a compressed format, and dynamically decompressed to handle cache misses at the next higher level of memory. The requirements that compression/decompression, address translation, and memory management be performed by hardware has implications for the directory structure and storage allocation designs used within the C-RAM. Various new approaches, presented here, are necessary in these areas in order to have methods that are amenable to hardware implementation. Furthermore, there are numerous design issues for the directory and storage management architectures. We consider a number of these issues, and evaluate various approaches using analytic methods and simulations."
Analysis of asynchronous multiprocessor algorithms with applications to sorting by J. T Robinson( Book )

3 editions published in 1977 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Efficient algorithms for asynchronous multiprocessor systems must achieve a balance between low process communication and high adaptability to variations in process speed. Algorithms which employ problem decomposition can be classified as static and dynamic. Static and dynamic algorithms are particularly suited for low process communication and high adaptability, respectively. In order to find the 'best' method, something about mean execution times must be known. Techniques for the analysis of the mean execution time are developed for each type of algorithm, including applications of order statistics and queueing theory. These techniques are applied in detail to (1) static generalizations of quicksort, (2) static generalizations of merge sort, and (3) a dynamic generalization of quicksort. (Author)
Parallel compression with cooperative dictionary construction by P Franaszek( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "It is often desirable to compress or decompress relatively small blocks of data at high bandwidth and low latency (for example, for data fetches across a high speed network). Sequential compression may not satisfy the speed requirement, while simply splitting the block into smaller subblocks for parallel compression yields poor compression performance due to small dictionary sizes. We here consider an intermediate approach, where multiple compressors jointly construct a dictionary. The result is parallel speedup, with compression performance similar to the sequential case."

Analysis of steady state segment storage utilizations in a log structured file system with lwast utilized segment cleaning by J. T Robinson( Book )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "The steady-state distribution of storage utilizations of segments in a log-structured file system with least-utilized (greedy) segment cleaning is found using analytic methods. Furthermore, it is shown that as the number of segments increases, this distribution approaches a limiting continuous distribution, which is also derived. These results could be useful for preliminary performance analysis of LFS-type system designs prior to the development of detailed simulation models or actual implementation."
