In India circa after the British Rule, there is a princely family consisting of Bade Thakur (Shammi Kapoor), his sons Devan (Vijayendra Ghatge), Vikram Singh (Vinod Khanna), and a third son who is a Police Officer (Mohsin Khan). Devan is threatened by the changes taking place in India, and the gradual erosion of power by princely families and zamindars. His brothers, on the contrary, accept the change. Vikram even has a lowly peasant, Sumer Singh (Dharmendra) for a friend. But fate has something else in store for these two friends. Things come to such a boil that eventually Bade Thakur may have to decide to split the estate. How will this effect the relationships of the father and the sons? Will this impact on the friendship of Sumer and Vikram?

The film is about two warring royal families in Rajasthan, India called the Mirtagarh and the Surjangarh. He is too however fated to continue this bloody family tradition by fighting Maharaja Prithvi Singh. Years later the sons of Maharaja Bhavani and Maharaja Prithvi respectively Vikram (Sanjay Dutt) and Vinay (Sunny Deol) are the best of friends living in England. Vinay even wants to marry Neelima (Raveena Tandon), the sister of Vikram which could finally signal the end of the Mirtagarh and Surjangarh feud. Will they succeed in finally ending this feud between their respective families or will they too be fated to continue this bloody tradition by being forced to fight each other where only one will be left standing
