"Focuses mainly on the fate of a Jewish family after the Anschluss ... Two brothers, Joseph and Robert Schuster, were forced into exile in 1938 and through friendly colleagues in England received appointments at Oxford and Cambride as professors of literatire and history respectively. Joseph Schuster's wife, two daughters, and son accompanied him. After the war the family returned to Austria, where the brothers resumed teaching at the University of Vienna. Prior to the beginning of the play, Joseph Schuster jumps to his death from the apartment window facing the Heldenplatz [Heroes Square]. This event serves as a catalyst for the play, which examines his life and character seeking the reasons for his suicde."--Donald G. Daviau, 34-35
Die Jagdgesellschaft by Thomas Bernhard ( Visual )
9 editions published between 1974 and 2009 in German and Undetermined and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Set in a hunting lodge. "The owner of the estate is an ailing World War II general who lost an arm in the Battle of Stalingrad. His forests and hunting grounds are also dying, infested by bark beetles. Nearly blind from glaucoma, he can't see the devastation. The general is out hunting in the company of high-ranking ministers, a young prince employed as the gamekeeper, and his princess. The general's wife plays cards with a young writer. The writer agonizes about nature, human and otherwise." Gitta Honneger, p. 123
Der Theatermacher by Thomas Bernhard ( Visual )
7 editions published between 1990 and 2008 in German and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"A play about the performance of a play. The characters represent a small troup of actors--a family, as usual; and the setting is a provincial stage in Austria. ... The central figure is the 'nationally recognized actor' Bruscon ... now on tour of the provincial theaters with a play he himself has written." Jeanette R. Malkin, p. 188
Ritter, Dene, Voss by Thomas Bernhard ( Visual )
7 editions published between 1987 and 2008 in German and Undetermined and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Ritter, Dene, Voss involves the Worringer sisters--both Viennese actresses--preparing for their brother's return from the Steinhof mental institution in Vienna, where he has been a patient for some time. Dene is the driving force behind an attempt at reintegrating him into family life while Ritter remains skeptical. When Voss, a tormented genius (loosely based on last century's great, idiosyncratic philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein), finally appears, it becomes clear that he never planned to stay for good. The play takes place before, during, and after lunch, unfolding through caustic dialogue in this 'misanthropic comedy.'"
Der Ignorant und der Wahnsinnige by Thomas Bernhard ( Visual )
10 editions published between 1972 and 2008 in German and Undetermined and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
