Global conceptualism : points of origin, 1950s-1980s by Luis Camnitzer( Book )

3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 439 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Global Conceptualism: Points of Origin, 1950s-1980s challenges the canonical perception that conceptual art was simply one movement which spread internationally and acknowledges the important local circumstances which gave birth to conceptualist art in regions around the world. This book traces the history of this key development in 20th-century art which was marked by a shift from a consideration of the object to that of the idea. Covering three decades of idea-based art, this book features works by more than 135 artists from Asia, Western Europe and Eastern Europe, Latin America, North America, the Soviet Union (Russia), Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. This catalogue is published in conjunction with a major touring exhibition organized by the Queens Museum of Art, Queens, New York

NeoHooDoo : art for a forgotten faith( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"NeoHooDoo, a phrase coined by the poet Ishmael Reed in the late 1960s, celebrates the practice of rituals, folklore, and spirituality in the Americas beyond the scope of Christianity and organized religion. This book examines the work of thirty-three artists, including Jimmie Durham, David Hammons, Jose Bedia, Rebecca Belmore, and James Lee Byars, who began using ritualistic practices during the 1970s and 1980s as a way of reinterpreting aspects of their cultural heritage. Younger artists such as Tania Bruguera and Michael Joo are shown to have drawn upon the iconography of ritual. The original essays, which discuss artistic use of ritual as a form of celebration, catharsis, or political critique, stand alongside contributions from NeoHooDoo's key sources of inspiration: Robert Farris Thompson, Ishmael Reed, and Quincy Troupe."--Jacket
Susan Rothenberg : moving in place by Susan Rothenberg( Book )

5 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 254 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Publisher: A retrospective volume of Susan Rothenberg's work, this book addresses the artist's entire career to date, focusing on her unique methods and themes. Full-color illustrations and foldouts of Rothenberg's best- known early works as well as exciting new paintings afford readers the chance to observe the evolution of Rothenberg's themes. From her earliest horse paintings through her spinning figures of the 1980s and early 1990s to her most recent series of paintings of dismembered puppets, this book highlights key compositional strategies in Rothenberg's work. Michael Auping contributes an essay addressing Rothenberg's painting process and the eclectic influences that have helped shape her figurative and spatial distortions. Barbara Buhler Lynes addresses Rothenberg's work in the context of Santa Fe and the tradition of twentieth-century women artists it has inspired, from Mable Dodge Luhan to Georgia O'Keeffe to Agnes Martin

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Lam's paintings craft Surrealist conjunctions from Cuban religious iconography--especially from tribal masks--and retrieve a suppressed Afro-Cuban culture that ultimately sets them apart from any movement. It particularly addresses the role of Lam's Afro-Cuban ethnicity in the development of his unusual hybridized vocabulary, a blend of Paris School, Surrealist and Afro-Cuban aesthetics."--Amazon
