The first film to be produced in postwar Germany. Wolfgang Staudte's narrative focuses on Dr. Hans Mertens, a former officer in the German army who has been severely traumatized by the atrocities perpetrated by his superiors. Tormented by his conscience, Mertens wanders through a Germany ruined by the privations of World War II. Returning to Berlin, he finds that his former SS commander has successfully transformed himself into a wealthy industrialist, apparently untroubled by his role in the holocaust. Dr. Mertens, takes it upon himself to administer justice to his former commanding officer, who he knows to be guilty of war crimes. This was the first and perhaps the best of the so-called 'Trummerfilme', films from the rubble. It was also the first film from DEFA, the East German production company founded in 1946

This film also contains original war footage and German Newsreel clips that blend together to form a picture of the last desperate days of the most important battle of World War II
