This presentation describes the life and contributions to medicine made by Dr. George W. Thorn, Hershey Professor of Physics, Emeritus, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Thorn is interviewed by Dr. John P. Merrill, Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. In this presentation Dr. John Z. Bowers first briefly describes the series "Leaders in American Medicine." Dr. Thorn then describes his early interest in Addison's disease and the adrenal extract. He describes the experiments in the physiology laboratory on adrenalectomized rats with Dr. Hartman. This interest led to a three year scholarship which permitted him to study at the Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Ohio and Johns Hopkins where he continued his experiments on adrenalectomized dogs and normal human subjects. He discusses his interest in the sodium and potassium metabolism, edema, salt retaining hormone and corticosterone. During the second world war Dr. Thorn and his associates began studying dogs in high pressure chambers to study the relationship of stress and the adrenal glands. His work in renal insufficiency, nitrogen retention and dialysis after coming to Harvard in 1942 is also discussed. Dr. Thorne thendiscusses the wide applications of steroids today, his philosophy of medicine, his teaching methods, and his views on prepaid medical health care plans

Following supra lethal x-irradiation in dogs, the re-injection of autologous marrow removed before irradiation does not prolong the life of kidney homografts. Injection of homogenate of the contralateral kidney inhibits the increase in weight seen in the control animal's remaining kidney following nephrectomy. Cortisone treatment prolongs the survival of skin homografts in rabbits. In studies of fructose clearance in dogs a tubular maximum for fructose reabsorption was demonstrated. Pre-immunization of ambulatory adult volunteers with human leukocytes show acceleration of skin grafts subsequently placed from the donors. Sequential study has been made in man of the development of first set accelerated and white graft rejection patterns in skin homografts. Twelve arterio-venous bypass catheters have been placed for the facilitation of hemodialysis in acute and chronic uremia. In one patient such a shunt remained in place for 112 days and a second shunt for 71 days. In the other patients problems of clotting and infection necessitated removal before adequate therapy with dialysis could be obtained. In the patient whose shunts remained in for the periods of 112 and 71 days useful prolongation of life was obtained in spite of chronic terminal uremia. (Author)
