MIHIEL; MEUSE-ARGONNE; DEFENSIVE SECTOR". Ribbon suspends a bronze medallion. Obverse: a winged female figure [Victory] wearing a spiked crown and holding a sword and shield. Reverse: a U. S. shield and mace, "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION; FRANCE, ITALY, SERBIA..." [the names of 14 Allied and Associated nations]. Atop the shield is a fasces--a medievel battle axe. James Earle Fraser was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1876, but when he was four his family moved to Dakota Territory. The newly arrived family lives in a boxcar near the town of Mitchell in South Dakota. After a few months they move to an unfinished ranch house where they manage to survive a typically ferocious northern Plains winter. After such an expeerience, the coming of the prairie spring makes a deep impression on the young boy
