"For nearly four centuries the cod fishery has been a mainstay of the economy of Newfoundland. Following a decline in cod stocks during the 1980s the government imposed a temporary and subsequent permanent moratorium on cod fishing. This led to substantial out-migration from fishing dependent communities. In the late 1990s there was a turn to shell-fishing that proved an extremely lucrative industry for fish harvesters who could access these resources. There has been limited research on the social and physical well-being of communities affected by these changes in Newfoundland. Research in other regions would suggest that certain communities may be more resilient than others.
