The costs of perinatal mental health problems( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Perinatal mental illnesses are a major public health issue in Great Britain and are very common, affecting up to 20% of women at some point during the perinatal period. This report provides comprehensive estimates of the economic costs of these perinatal mental health problems. It reveals that perinatal depression, anxiety and psychosis carry a total long-term cost to society of about £8.1 billion for each one-year cohort of births in the UK. Almost three-quarters of this cost relates to adverse impacts on the child rather than the mother, and over a fifth of total costs are borne by the public sector. The report also explains the uses and implications of these cost estimates, and reviews current service provision. The report is part of the Everyone's Business Campaign

"The report, commissioned via LSE Enterprise, identifies and analyses the costs and economic pay-offs of a range of interventions in the area of mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention. It models fifteen areas, including parenting interventions for children with persistent conduct disorders, workplace screening for depression and anxiety disorders, debt and the befriending of older adults. It finds that many interventions are outstandingly good value for money, low in cost and often become self financing over time, saving public expenditure."--The London School of Economics and Political Science website
