Carol Reed nutzte die Expressivität des zerbombten Wiens, um eine düstere Grundstimmung zu schaffen, in der sich Joseph Cotton und Orson Welles als ehemalige Freunde gegenüberstehen (wobei letzterer erst in der zweiten Hälfte des Films in Erscheinung tritt).
