Rail trail tourism : a study of the expectations of rail trail cyclists visiting long distance rail trails in Victoria by Paul Willard( )
1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Rail trails are recreational cycle routes developed from former railways no longer used by government authorities because of changes associated with population trends and transport infrastructure. Rail trails have contributed to the growing interest in, and development of, rail trail tourism. Their construction and expansion has the potential to capture the regional tourism market, but also generate revenue and economic benefits for business operators and townships. In recent years, increased popularity has created the need to design 'quality' rail trails to satisfy cyclists who visit them. In the context of this study, three broad user-types were used to define rail trail cyclists - 'holiday cyclists, 'short-break cyclists' and 'day excursionists' which helped in identifying the type of cyclist visiting long distance rail trails. To understand rail trail cyclists requires an appreciation of expectations, and the attributes that encourage positive word of mouth, repeat visitation and destination loyalty
