The Baroque world of Fernando Botero by John Sillevis( Book )

6 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 847 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Accompanying the artist's first American retrospective in more than thirty years, The Baroque World of Fernando Botero is the most extensive study of his life and work to date. Drawn exclusively from Botero's private collection, the one hundred works featured in this book, including previously unpublished paintings and drawings, represent the full scope of his oeuvre from a uniquely personal perspective. Many of these - portraits of friends and family members and remembered scenes - have remained in the artist's possession since their creation, while others he has bought back over the years as markers of significant developments in his career. Three essays examine the artist's creative life, from the aesthetic environment in which Botero developed his unique style to his catalyzing influence on the Colombian art world of the 1960s and '70s."--Jacket
The last days of Pompeii : decadence, apocalypse, resurrection by Victoria C Gardner Coates( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 401 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Destroyed yet paradoxically preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, Pompeii and other nearby sites are usually considered places where we can most directly experience the daily lives of ancient Romans. Rather than present these sites as windows to the past, however, the authors of this book exlore Pompeii as a modern obsession, in which the Vesuvian sites function as mirrors of the present. Through cultural appropriation and projection, outstanding visual and literary artists of the last three centuries have made the ancient catastrophe their own, expressing contemporary concerns in diverse media, from paintings, prints, and sculpture, to theatrical performances, photography, and film. This volume, featuring the works of artists such as Piranesi, Fragonard, Kaufmann, Ingres, Chasseriau, and Alma-Tadema, as well as Duchamp, Dali, Rothko, Rauschenberg, and Warhol, surveys the legacy of Pompeii in the modern imagination under the three overarching rubrics of decadence, apocalypse, and resurrection. The section on decadence investigates the perception of Pompeii as a site of impending and well-deserved doom due to the excesses of the ancient Romans, such as paganism, licentiousness, greed, gluttony, and violence. The catastrophic demise of the Vesuvian sites has become inexorably linked with the understanding of antiquity, turning Pompeii into a fundamental allegory for apocalypse, to which all subsequent disasters (natural or man-made) are related, from the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 to Hiroshima, Nagasaki, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina. The section on resurrection examines how Pompeii and the Vesuvian cities have been reincarnated in modern guise through both scientific archaeology and fantasy, as each successive cultural reality superimposed its values and ideas on the distant past

Stéphane La Rue : retracer la peinture by Marie-Eve Beaupr( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in French and English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marc-Aurèle Fortin : the experience of colour by Marc-Aurle Fortin( Book )

4 editions published in 2011 in French and English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Best known for landscapes in which stately green trees hold pride of place, Marc-Aurèle Fortin (1888-1970) is one of the most popular and beloved figures in the history of Quebec art. His prolific body of work bursts with stunning expressive power, from the 1909 Chicago paintings to the Montreal-area views of the 1920s and 30s and the landscapes of the Charlevoix, Gaspé and Saguenay regions captured in the 1940s. This major book reproduces more than 150 oils, water colours, etchings and pastels that proclaim the modernity of a virtuoso draftsman and colourist. Illustrating the milestones of a remarkable journey of exploration and freedom, it surveys the career of one of the most accomplished landscape painters of his day. His singular style, developed through endless experiments with colour, has indelibly marked the collective imagination. Reflecting many years of research, the book probes the Fortin "legend" in different ways, placing the artist and his work in a broad historical context. Written by authorities in the art of this period - Richard Foisy, François-Marc Gagnon, Michèle Grandbois, Sarah Mainguy and Esther Trépanier - it traces his biographical and aesthetic footsteps in detail and reveals the full import of his contribution to the history of Canadian art."--Page 4 of cover
