Matka dzieci holocaustu : historia Ireny Sendlerowej by Anna Mieszkowska( Book )

3 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in Polish and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sendlerowa (b. 1910), a Pole and a member of Żegota, was the head of the Department of Aid for Jewish Children. Sendlerowa and her team organized the rescue of ca. 2,500 children, finding them families to live with and supplying "Aryan" papers. The book comprises large sections of Sendlerowa's memoirs (never published), which she began to write in 1997, and conversations held with Mieszkowska. She spoke about many people, Poles and Jews, who were involved in the activities of her department. In October 1943 Sendlerowa was arrested by the Gestapo and tortured; she was freed due to Żegota's bribing of a Gestapo soldier. She then lived in Warsaw with a false identity, wanted by the Gestapo. She was the only person who knew where the hidden children were and what their real names were. Describes, also, her postwar activities and problems. In 1968 she was forced to retire because of her strong ties with Jews all over the world, including in Israel

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Janusz Korczak, whose original name was Henryk Goldszmit, is seen as the father of the idea that children also have rights - human rights. His thinking had an impact on the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and continues to influence the child-friendly programs of the Council of Europe. Korczak's message was about respect for children, respect for their inherent value as human beings but also for their capacity and competence. His essay "The Child's Right to Respect" in which he analyzes the role of adults and the place of children in society, is published in this volume.--Publisher's description

As a social worker, Irena had access to the Warsaw Ghetto, making it possible for her to rescue the daughter of a Jewish friend and safely hide the young girl with a Catholic family. Realizing that thousands of children were still in danger, Irena recruited sympathetic friends and co-workers to smuggle children out and place them in safe homes, farms and convents.
