Franz Marc (1880-1916) l'oeuvre sur papier by Isabelle Jansen( Book )

4 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in French and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Franz Marc (1880-1916), the main protagonist of the Blauer Reiter (Blue Rider) with Vassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), this movement within German Expressionism that originated in Munich during the years 1911-1914, is known primarily as a painter of animals. The study of his works on paper results in the modification of this simplistic aspect and demonstrates that he was interested in many other subjects and in the art of various civilizations. In its dual approach, chronological and thematic, this study treats unexpected aspects of Marcs' art such as exoticism, folk art or classicism. It covers his works on individual sheets of paper and also the ones in his sketchbooks which were realized in different media such as pencil, gouache or watercolour. This thesis constitutes the first detailed study totally focused on Franz Marcs' works on paper. It reveals an artist significantly more complex and with broader and more diverse interests than his paintings had previously led one to suppose
