They include many examples of "Yokohama Shashin" by influential photographers such as Felice Beato and Kimbei Kusakabe. Images portray Japan and traditional Japanese culture during the Meiji period. They include scenic landscapes, Mount Fuji, lakes and springs, villages and cities, sites along the Tōkaidō road, Nagoya and Osaka castles, the Imperial Palace, gardens and cherry trees, pagodas and Buddhist temples, torii and Shinto shrines; also, genre scenes or studio portraits showing traveling vendors, sumo wrestlers, geishas, women harvesting rice and tea leaves, samurai, craftsmen, laborers, sedan-chair bearers, and Buddhist monks. Of special note, black-and-white images of the Port Arthur theater of operations during the Russo-Japanese War.
