Doctor Atomic : opera in two acts by John Adams( Visual )

18 editions published between 2001 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 477 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

John Adams and Peter Sellars' opera about Robert Oppenheimer, at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam. Which better subject John Adams and Peter Sellars could have chosen to denonciate the fall of the modern world? The atomic bomb and its inventor, Robert Oppenheimer (Gerald Finley), are in the middle of the action of this opera, which premiered in 2005 at the San Francisco Opera. After him, the world will never be the way it used to be, and is inexorably shifting towards the nuclear era. And yet, this opera focuses on common and universal problems, including love stories and broken hearts. The title of this opera reminds us of the famous movie by Stanley Kubrick (Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb), and features fantastic artists such as Gerald Finley who created the role in 2005: it is without any doubt a masterpiece which "modernizes" the issues on the lyric planet
Saint François d'Assise : opera in three acts and eight tableaux by Olivier Messiaen( Visual )

9 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Moses und Aron by Arnold Schoenberg( Recording )

13 editions published between 1996 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Schoenberg's masterpiece in the twelve-tone system he developed was his unfinished opera, a vastly complex work based on a single tone row that it remained a fragment may be essential to its spiritual message, for while Schoenberg never stated it explicitly, it would seem that he left this most ambitious project of his mature style incomplete on purpose
Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( Recording )

Der fliegende Holländer by Richard Wagner( Visual )

Martin Zehetsgruber's spacious, multi-layered sets define the settings through which Dalland, Senta, The Dutchman and the chorus move to great effect fulfilling the fine conducting of Hartmut Haenchen

Castor et Pollux by Jean-Philippe Rameau( Visual )

14 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 130 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Castor et Pollux is arguably Rameau's finest creation in the tragédie lyrique style. Its libretto, based in mythology, focuses on an unusual theme: the self-sacrificing love between Castor, who is mortal, and his immortal brother, Pollux. When Castor is killed while defending his beloved Télaïre from an attempted abduction, Pollux resolves to give up his immortality and take Castor's place in the Underworld. After passionate debate over who will live and who will die, the brothers are eternally united, transformed into the constellation Gemini. The strikingly luminous sets, depicting a stylized version of the constellation, give this fabulous production, staged by Pierre Audi and conducted by Christophe Rousset, a glorious 21st-century baroque look."--Conteneur
Eugene Onegin : an opera in three acts by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky( Visual )

8 editions published in 2012 in Russian and Undetermined and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Described by Tchaikovsky as 'lyric scenes', Eugene Onegin receives a reinterpretation from the Norwegian director Stefan Herheim. His productions create controversy and excitement around Europe, and here he takes Pushkin's story of illusion, disaffection and frustrated love, and places the protagonists world-weary Onegin and naïve, passionate Tatyana -- in a triple temporal perspective, referencing the theatrical present, the period of the work's composition, and the pageant of Russia's history. Mariss Jansons, renowned for his mastery of Tchaikovsky's symphonies, conducts this performance from Amsterdam's Muziektheater
Pierre Boulez : the artist's album by Pierre Boulez( Recording )

3 editions published in 2000 in German and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ercole Amante by Pier Francesco Cavalli( Visual )

11 editions published in 2010 in Italian and Undetermined and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This hilarious contemporary version of Francesco Cavalli's baroque opera Hercules in Love was commissioned on occasion of the marriage of Louis XIV, the Sun King, to Maria Theresa of Spain. The original production took two years to complete and was at the time the greatest show ever performed in Europe. Directed by David Alden, this surreal production is a triumph of commedia buffa resplendent with decorative and symbolic elements, and complemented by Constance Hoffman's exceptional costumes. Led by Ivor Bolton, a master of baroque music, the chorus of De Nederlandse Opera and Concerto Köln give a sublime performance. With Luca Pisaroni's (Ercole) singing being heroic and melodious in turn, and Veronica Cangemi as a splendid Iole, this is an outstanding production by the DNO
Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss( Recording )

19 editions published between 1977 and 2012 in German and Undetermined and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Karl Bohm's only studio version of the work was recorded in 1958. When Deutsche Grammophon originally planned to record the work, there were already two rival versions on the market: the Decca recording under Erich Kleiber and EMI's version under Herbert von Karajan. Karajan's recording was made in December 1956 and should have included Irmgard Seefried as Octavian and Rita Streich as Sophie, but in both cases cast changes became necessary: Seefried was replaced by the young Christa Ludwig, and pregnancy forced Rita Streich to withdraw. As a result, Deutsche Grammophon was able to use both these singers for its own recording exactly two years later. It boasts a wonderful cast, with the full-throated Marianne Schech as the Marschallin, Irmgard Seefried bringing a range of colour to the 'trouser' role of Octavian, Rita Streich light and exquisite as Sophie, and a rounded, lyrical portrait of Faninal from Fischer-Dieskau. The recording also reunited Bohm with his 'old' orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, an orchestra often referred to as the Zauberharfe or Magic Harp for the fluent and airborne quality of its sound
Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss( Recording )

24 editions published between 1988 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A brilliant ensemble cast bring Strauss's beloved operetta to life, with new English dialogue by playwright Douglas Carter Beane and lyrics by Jeremy Sams (who also directed this production, first seen on New Year's Eve 2013). Christopher Maltman and Susanna Phillips are Eisenstein and Rosalinde, the married couple at the center of this lighthearted tale of love, revenge, and mistaken identities. Paulo Szot sings Falke, Eisenstein's friend, who sets the plot in motion. Anthony Roth Costanzo is Prince Orlofsky, Jane Archibald sings Adele, and Broadway star Danny Burstein is Frosch, the jailer. Adam Fischer conducts
Le nozze di Figaro : K. 492 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( Recording )

De Nederlandse Opera presents Les Vêpres siciliennes : opera in five acts by Giuseppe Verdi( Visual )

2 editions published in 2011 in French and held by 83 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Les vepres siciliennes, like the similarly epic Don Carlos, was conceived as a grand opera for Paris and is driven by the tensions between private passions and public politics. Originally set during Sicily's 13th-century uprising against French rule, in Christof Loy's staging for the Netherlands Opera the action is transposed to a 1940s world of sudden violence and shadowy double-dealing. Imaginatively cast and idiomatically conducted, the performance presents this magnificent score in its entirety, including the allegorical ballet The Four Seasons
