L'architecte Hector Guimard (1867-1942) est principalement connu comme l'auteur des célèbres entrées du métropolitain de Paris. Mais aussi du Castel Béranger (1898), immeuble au décor très novateur, point de départ d'une carrière placée sous le signe d'une originalité sans concession. Principalement créateur de maisons singulières, mais aussi d'édifices industriels ou d'habitation, de tombes et de pavillons d'expositions, il fut en outre un remarquable concepteur de meubles et d'objets dans les matériaux les plus divers. Dès 1900, il inventa l'expression le " Style Guimard " pour définir une manière qui se voulait très personnelle, totalement sans rapport avec l'Art Nouveau - dont il fut pourtant l'un des représentants majeurs en France -, et qui fit de lui un créateur isolé. Depuis vingt ans, la connaissance de sa vie et de ses travaux a beaucoup évolué, grâce à la découverte de nouveaux édifices et de nombreux objets inédits, mais aussi de la diffusion de divers fonds documentaires. Ceci permet une nouvelle approche du travail de Guimard, par une compréhension plus fine de sa méthode de création, et surtout des influences réciproques entre son activité d'architecte et ses ambitions d'artiste décorateur--Back cover
