Memorabilia by Xenophon( Book )

151 editions published between 1826 and 1886 in 6 languages and held by 273 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An essential text for understanding Socrates, Xenophon's Memorabilia is the compelling tribute of an affectionate student to his teacher, providing a rare firsthand account of Socrates' life and philosophy. The Memorabilia is invaluable both as a work of philosophy in its own right and as a complement to the study of Plato's dialogues. The longest of Xenophon's four Socratic works, it is particularly revealing about the differences between Socrates and his philosophical predecessors

Brings to life for us the unrest and conspiracies, the struggle over the imperial succession, the prodigies and portents, the military campaigns all the way from Ethiopia to Yugoslavia. The author shows us the ruthless power-seeking as the 400-year-old republic finally collapsed and makes a great set-piece of the battle of Actium -- where Augustus defeated Antony and Cleopatra to become master of the world. He also inserts fictionalized speeches into his narrative, which offer his own profound political reflections or dramatize the many different attitudes to the emperor. The fascinating debate between the great general Agrippa and Maecenas (the patron of Horace and Virgil) on the merits of republicanism and monarchy confronts issues which are still very much alive today

The chronicle of John Malalas by John Malalas( Book )

38 editions published between 1831 and 1961 in 6 languages and held by 170 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Main description: This is the critical edition of the earliest extant Byzantine world chronicle, the Chronographia by Ioannes Malalas (Malalas' = Syrian for 'rhetor' or 'scholar'). Iohannes Malalas was born approximately in 490 in or near Antiochia and died approximately in 570/580. He wrote his chronicle in the contemporary colloquial Greek. The edition comprises the Prolegomena which give information about the handwritten tradition of the Chronographia, the edition of the text with a rich apparatus fontium and a precise apparatus criticus as well as the indices planned in the CFHB. The edition replaces that one of Dindorf (1813 in the corpus of Bonn). It offers a more complete text in so far as it contains for the first time the first book and uses the translation of the Slavic Church in the 10/11th century for the textual construction
