The collection, arranged chronologically, contains detailed letters about his travels in Italy and his life in the United States with characterization of the local landscape and news about dealers and mutual friends. In 1891 he writes from Capri and describes his impressions of Rome and the Italian Campagna. Letters of 1892 and 1893 written from New York contain comments on attitudes in New York towards recent painting, the Chicago World's Fair, and the stress he places on color, atmosphere and an understanding of the "whole" in his art; in 1894 he notes the indispensibility of line. He discusses Monet's successes in New York in a letter of 1896.
