The style of this book is that of a travel narrative or diary. Each chapter is organized by an overarching theme, but with some tangentially-related anecdotes. Smith's position is primarily that of a social observer, rather an economic or political one, though some of those issues are touched on. Smith was particularly fascinated by Muslim women and gender relations. The second edition includes two new chapters chiefly of a statistical character, with a view to showing the state of the government at the close of the war with Russia
