The Oxford companion to architecture by Patrick Goode( Book )

13 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1,500 A-Z entries cover all aspects of architecture, from architects, building types, and movements and styles to materials, aspects of design, and definitions. The Companion offers complete coverage of architecture from around the world, giving equal weight to architecture in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America as to the more familiar examples from Western Europe and the United States, and of both modern and vernacular architecture. It covers all periods, from the beginnings of architecture in ancient Egypt to the present day, and yet is strongly rooted in an approach to architecture that looks at its social, technical, and practical aspects, beyond an art-historical perspective--Publisher description

The other tradition of modern architecture : the uncompleted project by Colin St. John Wilson( Book )

25 editions published between 1995 and 2014 in English and held by 373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sets out to examine the underlying themes of Modern European architecture, assessing their impact, influence, and continuing development. The artist at work : on the working methods of William Coldstream and Michael Andrews by Colin St. John Wilson( Book )

5 editions published between 1999 and 2008 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first full-scale study to focus on the working methods of artists by direct observation - in this case two leading members of the School of London, William Coldstream and Michael Andrews. This comparative analysis contains hitherto unpublished material by the artists and includes the author's copious notes and his own sketches and photographs of the artists at work painting portraits of him." "This study highlights the very different working methods of the two artists, and yet shows their concern to represent through paint alone the reality of human presence."--Jacket

The new Finnish architecture by Scott Poole( Book )

4 editions published between 1992 and 1997 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The New Finnish Architecture is a rich, detailed, and long-overdue examination of Finland's vital contributions to twentieth-century modern architecture over the last four decades. Home to Alvar Aalto, one of the greatest masters of the modern movement, Finland has nurtured many dedicated and innovative architects who continue to wrestle with the lessons of modernism and the legacy of Aalto. This volume presents the work of thirteen individual architects and firms and their engaging and provocative designs. Among them are Arkkitehdit KY, Juhani Pallasmaa, Arto Sipinen, Heikkinen/Komonen, ARRAK, and MONARK, the student collective that won the national competition for the Finnish pavilion at the 1992 World's Fair in Seville. Each architect or firm is presented individually in well-illustrated chapters. Two essays by author Scott Poole give a historical overview of modern architecture in Finland, the work of Aalto, and the work of the rationalist school that followed him in the 1950s--including Aulis Blomstedt, Aarno Ruusuvuori, and Juhani Pallasmaa, among others. The New Finnish Architecture continues Rizzoli's series on current international developments in architecture, following The New French Architecture and The New Japanese Architecture. Forthcoming volumes will feature Germany, Spain, Italy, Mexico, and Austria

An architecture of invitation : Colin St. John Wilson by Sarah Menin( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An Architecture of Invitation: Colin St. John Wilson is a distinctive study of the life and architectural career of one of the most significant makers, theorists and teachers of architecture to have emerged in England in the second half of the twentieth century. Exceptionally in an architectural study, this book interweaves biography, critical analysis of the projects, and theory, in its aims of explicating the richness of Wilson's body of work, thought and teaching. Drawing on the specialisms of its authors, it also examines the creative and psychological impulses that have informed the making of this work - an oeuvre whose experiential depth is recognized by both users and critics."--Jacket
