"Written for the 1745 marriage of the Dauphin and the Spanish Infanta, Platée was a minor revolution when first performed, and was also the first purely burlesque work staged. Rameau's work on the vicissitudes of love satirises the sacrosanct rules of 18th century operatic form and is an enormous pastiche of traditional French opera. With love as its most popular subject, Rameau's use of Jupiter's feigned courtship of Plataea gleefully parodies every 18th century musical form. Thalia and Momus have come to help Thespius, the inventor of comedy, stage a performance to correct the faults of humans. The subject will be "the laughable strategy" once used by Jupiter to cure the jealousy of the irascible Juno."--SBS

When the most powerful man in the world meets the most desirable woman in the world sparks are guaranteed to fly--which is why the irresistible story of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra still enchants us. Handel's opera, starring Jennifer Larmore and Sylvia McNair as the ill-fated couple, abounds with dazzling vocal pyrotechnics as well as heart-rending drama. Stephanie Blythe (Cornelia) and David Daniels (her son Sesto) give memorable performances as the grieving family of the murdered Pompey. Brian Asawa sings Cleopatra's conniving brother Tolomeo
La caravane du Caire [opéra-ballet en trois actes] ; Le jugement de Midas by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry( )
14 editions published between 1991 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
La Caravane du Caire is one of the rare works that Grétry composed for the Académie Royale that respected the conventions of the institution. Full of verve and color, this opera was one of the greatest successes of his career. A few exotic touches and the presence of a ballet also contributed to the score's success
