Papers of a Suffield, Connecticut, lawyer, politician and author. Correspondents include family members, business and legal clients, and politicians. Political correspondents include Chauncey F. Cleveland, James T. Pratt, John P. Hale (Free Soil candidate for President), Loren P. Waldo, Joseph R. Hawley, and John M. Niles and cover such topics as the Free Soil Party, anti-slavery issues, elections, political appointments, military pensions, and the Democratic Party. Among his legal papers are summonses, writs, depositions and briefs for cases before the state Superior Court. His personal legal papers consist of inventories of his estate, accounts for settling the estate, and a list of law books in his library. There are diaries for the years 1853-1858, court dockets, a letter book, and account books for his law practice. In addition to compositions he wrote in 1835, Philleo kept drafts and copies of short stories and articles for magazines as well as several speeches, all of which are part of the collection. Of particular note are Calvin's seaman's protection paper from 1835, handwritten journals of the Connecticut House of Representatives for 1846, and drafts of his published stories "Twice Married" and "Akin by Marriage". Also of interest are letters from Emeline C. Goodwin in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in which she mentions providing board for blind boys
