Security, territory, population : lectures at the Collège de France, 1977-78 by Michel Foucault( Book )

23 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Marking a major development in Foucault's thinking, this book derives from the lecture course which he gave at the College de France between January and April, 1978. Taking as his starting point the notion of "bio-power," introduced both in his 1976 course Society Must be Defended and in the first volume of his History of Sexuality, Foucault sets out to study the emergence of this new technology of power over population."--BOOK JACKET
The birth of biopolitics : lectures at the Collège de France, 1978-79 by Michel Foucault( Book )

23 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and held by 496 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Michel Foucault's 1979 lectures at the College de France, The Birth of Biopolitics, pursue and develop further the themes of his lectures from the previous year, Security, Territory, Population. Having shown how eighteenth century political economy marks the birth of a new governmental reason, Foucault undertakes the detailed analysis of the forms of this liberal governmentality. This involves describing the political rationality within which the specific problems of life and population were posed: "Studying liberalism as the general framework of biopolitics."" "What are the specific features of the liberal art of government as they were outlined in the eighteenth century? What crisis of governmentality characterizes the present world and what revisions of liberal government has it given rise to? This is the diagnostic task addressed by Foucault's study of the two major twentieth century schools of neo-liberalism: German ordoliberalism and the neo-liberalism of the Chicago School. In the years he taught at the College de France, this was Michel Foucault's sole foray into the field of contemporary history. This course raises questions of political philosophy and social policy that are at the heart of current debates about the role and status of neo-liberalism in twentieth century politics. A remarkable feature of these lectures is their discussion of contemporary economic theory and practice, culminating in an analysis of the model of homo oeconomicus, or economic man." "Foucault's analysis also highlights the paradoxical role played by "society" in relation to government. "Society" is that in the name of which government strives to limit itself, but it is also the target for permanent governmental intervention to produce, multiply, and guarantee the freedoms required by economic liberalism. Far from being opposed to the State, civil society is thus shown to be the correlate of a liberal technology of government."--Jacket

Raimundi Lulli Opera Latina by Ramon Llull( Book )

75 editions published between 1975 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 158 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Volume XXXV of the 'Raimundi Lulli Opera latina' comprises critical editions of Ramon Lull's 'Lectura compendiosa Tabulae generalis' and 'Lectura super tertiam figuram Tabulae generalis' (both edited by Coralba Colomba), his 'Liber de affatu, Flores amoris et intelligentiae, Disputatio quinque hominum sapientium', as well as his petitions to Pope Celestine V and Boniface VIII (edited by Viola Tenge-Wolf). In the 'Tabula generalis' (completed in January 1294), Ramon Lull had introduced a rigid simplification of the combinatorial mechanism which lies at the basis of his Art. Both his 'Lectura compendiosa Tabulae generalis' (op. 54) and 'Lectura super tertiam figuram Tabulae generalis' (op. 55), written in Italy between 1294 and 1296, represent the exegetical apparatus of the 'Tabula'. The 'Lectura compendiosa' presents the contents of the 'Tabula' in a synthetic way, as the title conveys. Of the second 'Lectura', originally devoted to the third figure of Lull's Art, only the first part has survived

Du gouvernement des vivants : cours au Collège de France, 1979-1980 by Michel Foucault( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Son œuvre, entre philosophie, histoire et littérature, est difficile à situer. Les disciplines traditionnelles peinent à la contenir. Sa chaire au Collège de France s{u2019}intitulait Histoire des systèmes de pensée{OCLCbr#BB}. Lui-même ne cessa jamais de relire Kant, Nietzsche, Heidegger, mais il cite moins les classiques de la philosophie que d{u2019}obscurs traités, règlements ou manuels conservés dans des fonds d'archives, royaumes des historiens. Des historiens professionnels{OCLCbr#BB} de son temps Foucault partage d{u2019}ailleurs l{u2019}ambition : ouvrir l{u2019}histoire à de nouveaux objets. Il reste que ce sont bien des problématiques philosophiques que renouvellent ses histoires{OCLCbr#BB} (de la folie, de la sexualité), ses archéologies{OCLCbr#BB} (des sciences humaines, du savoir), ses récits de naissance{OCLCbr#BB} (de la clinique, de la prison). Et j'ai beau dire que je ne suis pas un philosophe, si c'est tout de même de la vérité que je m'occupe, je suis malgré tout philosophe.{OCLCbr#BB} Philosophe malgré tout{OCLCbr#BB}, Foucault a inventé une nouvelle manière de faire de la philosophie. Il n{u2019}a pas apporté une pierre de plus à l{u2019}édifice compartimenté de la pensée : en en abattant les cloisons, il en a bouleversé l{u2019}architecture. Il a rendu les disciplines communicantes. Certains spécialistes n{u2019}ont pas manqué de le lui reprocher. Et la littérature? Ses livres sont savants. Ils témoignent d{u2019}une érudition stupéfiante. Encore faut-il donner forme à l{u2019}informe de l{u2019}archive. Les citations, le maillage de références, la mise en scène d{u2019}épisodes historiques, tout, chez Foucault, est déplié, exposé dans une écriture tour à tour baroque et rigoureuse, austère et splendide, démesurée et classique. En bibliothèque, il se sent porté par les mots des autres. Leur intensité nourrit son écriture. La lecture se prolonge, se renforce, se réactive par l{u2019}écriture, écriture qui est elle aussi un exercice, elle aussi un élément de méditation.{OCLCbr#BB} Le matériau des historiens et l{u2019}horizon tracé par les philosophes s{u2019}augmentent chez lui d{u2019}une exigence littéraire apprise auprès de Flaubert, Blanchot, Beckett. Le traiter de styliste{OCLCbr#BB} serait réducteur. Foucault, qui se disait artisan, est un écrivain. Outre un choix de textes brefs, articles, préfaces ou conférences, cette édition rassemble tous ses livres personnels. Leur influence est immense. Mais leur réunion ne vise pas à former une autobiographie intellectuelle. Je ne veux pas de ce qui pourrait donner l{u2019}impression de rassembler ce que j{u2019}ai fait en une espèce d'unité qui me caractériserait et me justifierait.{OCLCbr#BB} Voyons plutôt en elle ce que Foucault disait d{u2019}Histoire de la folie en 1975 : J{u2019}envisageais ce livre comme une espèce de souffle vraiment matériel, et je continue à le rêver comme ça, une espèce de souffle faisant éclater des portes et des fenêtres{u2026}{OCLCbr#BB}
