"In Macunaíma, cinema novo pioneer Joaquim Pedro de Andrade adapted a masterpiece of Brazilian modernism to reflect the simultaneous triumph of tropicalismo and onset of military dictatorship. Pure essence of 1969, the movie is a funny, freewheeling mélange of primitive myth and Busby Berkeley, hippie street theater and cabaret star Grande Otelo, glamorized urban guerrillas and documented candomblé rituals; it's full of racial high jinks, with a free-floating cannibal metaphor applied most savagely to a capitalist ogre."--Village Voice

"Set in the 18th century in the state of Minas Gerais, [... the film] tells the story of the uprising known as the "Inconfidência Mineira", which was inspired by the French Revolution and the American Independence Movement and was Brazil's first attempt at independence from Portugal. Os Inconfidentes traces the rise and fall of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, aka Tiradentes (José Wilker) charismatic leader of the movement, as well as that of his fellow conspirators. Filmed at the height of Brazil's military dictatorship, this tale of oppression and freedom is peppered with veiled subversive commentary. Based on the poem Romanceiro da Inconfidência (1953) by Cecilia Meireles."--Http://www.worldscinema.com/2010/01/joaquim-pedro-de-andrade-os.htm

Oswald is played by both a man and woman. Characters from Brazil's literary and artistic past appear in various scenes, some in re-enactments of actual events. ... An homage that's simultaneously insightful and completely irreverent."--Film Society of Lincoln Center
Brasilia contradictions d'une ville nouvelle by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade( Visual )

3 editions published in 2009 in Portuguese and French and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
