Vermeer and the Delft school by Walter A Liedtke ( Book )
11 editions published in 2001 in English and German and held by 1,111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Seventeenth-century Delft has often been viewed as a quaint town whose artists painted scenes of domestic life. This book revises that image, showing that the small but vibrant Dutch city produced a wide range of artworks, including luxurious tapestries and silver objects, as well as sophisticated paintings for the court at The Hague and for patrician collectors in Delft itself."--BOOK JACKET
Peter Paul Rubens : the drawings by Anne-Marie S Logan ( Book )
14 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 738 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"For the great Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), drawing was a fundamental activity. In Rubens's large Antwerp studio, drawings were made for the creation of new paintings; collaborators used them to assist the master on these paintings; and they served as instructional material for pupils. The drawings were guarded from the outside world because they were considered a kind of studio secret; the competition could exploit designs for new compositions if they were released prematurely. How precious Rubens considered his drawings is evident from his testament, which stipulated that they should be passed on to any of his sons or sons-in-law who chose to be a painter; only when it was clear, once all his children were grown, that none would become an artist or marry one could the drawings be dispersed." "This volume presents, in full-color reproductions, more than one hundred of the finest and most representative of Rubens's drawings, ranging from delightful renderings of children and elegant portraits of noblemen and women to vigorous animal studies and beautiful landscapes. Essays by Anne-Marie Logan and Michiel C. Plomp provide overviews of Rubens's career as a draftsman and of the eventual dispersal of his drawings among collectors some fifteen years after his death. The authors discuss the various functions of Rubens's drawings as preparatory studies for paintings, sculpture, prints, and book illustrations and as private studies meant largely for the artist's own enjoyment." "The volume also includes a sampling of the artist's early anatomical studies and copies after antique sculpture, made during his years in Italy (1600-1608). In all likelihood it was also in Italy that Rubens began to collect old master drawings. Eventually he amassed a large quantity of other artists' drawings, most of them by sixteenth-century Italian masters, and he retouched, restored, or reworked many of them. These retouched sheets - several of which are reproduced herein - offer additional insight into his creativity. They are also a starting point for a discussion of the fortunes of Rubens's drawings among collectors."--BOOK JACKET

Rembrandt and his circle : drawings and prints by Michiel Plomp ( Book )
10 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Treasured throughout Europe since the seventeenth century, Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijns prints were objects of esteem during his lifetime (16061669). Artists, writers, and collectors at the time admired Rembrandt's work, and already in 1641, when the artist was in his mid-thirties, he was praised in a German publication as one of the most noteworthy printmakers of the era. In 1995, The Metropolitan Museum of Art presented "Rembrandt/ Not Rembrandt," an exhibition that displayed the artists paintings, drawings, and prints, but concentrated on his connoisseurship. Although much of the information contained in this volume depends heavily on the 1995 exhibition, the focus here is different. In this manuscript, more attention is paid to Rembrandt's pupils and to other artists from his immediate circle. In part because of his fame, Rembrandt was a sought after teacher. The exact number of his pupils is unknown but may have numbered about forty or fifty. Some of them, such as Ferdinand Bol, Govaert Flinck, and Nicolaes Maes, would become important artists in their own right. The pupils closely imitated Rembrandt's style and technique, creating works that are sometimes hard to distinguish from those of the master. Apart from their beauty and sheer quality, the pupils works on paper have undergone serious investigation only in recent decades, resulting in quite a number of repercussions and changes of attribution in the master's oeuvrea process that continues today. This volume and the exhibition it accompanies celebrate Rembrandt's 400th birthday."--The Metropolitan Museum of Art web site

Hulde! : penningkunst in de Gouden Eeuw ( Book )
2 editions published in 2012 in Dutch and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
