She tells him that he must abandon Carthage and found a new Troy on Latin soil. While Aeneas hates the thought of leaving Dido, he cannot refuse a god's command. Two sisters whose fiancés have gone off to war (or so they pretend), a clever maid, a cynical old philosopher, and those same two fiancés in disguise--six characters is all it takes for Mozart and his librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte, to explore both the fun and the heartbreak that love can lead to in this equally lighthearted and deeply human comedy. James Levine masterfully leads a stellar cast that includes Carol Vaness and Tatiana Troyanos as the sisters, Jerry Hadley and Thomas Hampson as their fiancés, Betsy Norden as Despina, and Richard Van Allen as Don Alfonso
