The origins of Kant's arguments in the Antinomies by Ṣādiq Jalāl ʻAẓm( Book )

12 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 403 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this essay is to investigate the historical origins of the arguments and counter-arguments formally set out by Kant as the four Antinomies of Pure Reason. The author attempts to show that our understanding of Kant's meaning in these abstruse texts improves greatly when full account is taken of their historical setting and beckground. The author also argues, on the basis of this approach, that the views defended in the four theses are substantially those of Samuel Clarke (and the Newtonians) as they were expressed in his famous correspondence with Leibniz, while the views defended in the antitheses are identical in essentials with those adopted by Leibniz in his controversy with the Newtonians. This means that the accepted interpretation of the Antinomies as a conflict between rationalist (Leibnizian) cosmology in the theses and a dogmatic rejection of that cosmology in the antitheses is wholly inaccurate

As in his earlier Self-Criticism after the Defeat, al-Azm takes on the taboos of the age and their sponsors: the religious elites. In this book he attempts to awaken the Arab mind from its dogmatic slumber, leading it out of the Middle Ages and into a modern world characterized by science and rationality"--
Self-criticism after the defeat by Ṣādiq Jalāl ʻAẓm( Book )

24 editions published between 1968 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A devastating critique of the Arab world's political stagnation by one of its most revered thinkers. The 1967 War - which led to the defeat of Syria, Jordan and Egypt by Israel - felt like an unprecedented and unimaginable disaster for the Arab world at the time. For many, the easiest solution was to shift the blame and to ignore some of the glaring defects of Arab society. Syrian philosopher Sadik al-Azm was one of the few to challenge such a view in his seminal Self-Criticism after the Defeat. Exposing the political and cultural faults that led to the defeat, he argued that the Arabs could o
