Letters by Decimus Burton to the RIBA, 1839-1880 by Decimus Burton( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Mainly relates to donations of books, prints and drawings to the Institute's collections, including lithographs of his Colosseum in Regents Park, London, and a collection of drawings by the late Henry Middleton, District Judge, of Indian architectural ornaments and buildings. Accompanied by a letter by Burton's executors, 13 January 1882, informing the RIBA that Burton had bequeathed to the Institute two models of his arch on Constitution Hill and the Hyde Park entrance facade, four drawings of a royal palace by Joseph Gandy and the sum of $100. The models were placed on loan to the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College, London in the 1930s (at the request of Sir Albert Richardson) and although it was long believed that they were destroyed by enemy action in 1941 when the library was bombed, a letter from Richardson of 1941 surfaced in 2010 informing the RIBA that they had survived (see letters in Information Files). In fact the models appear to have been given away or destroyed when the Bartlett School dispersed its historic collection in the 1960s, by which time both the RIBA and the Bartlett School had forgotten the models were on loan
