Joos van Cleve (1485-1540) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Künstlern der Renaissance. Der aus dem Klever Land stammende Künstler führte in Antwerpen eine grosse und überaus produktive Werkstatt, die Kunden in ganz Europa, von Italien bis Polen belieferte. Lange Zeit in Vergessenheit geraten, wurde sein Werk erst im 19. Jahrhundert wiederentdeckt. Kein anderer Antwerpener Maler dieser Zeit hinterliess einen ähnlich umfangreichen und zugleich qualitätsvollen Nachlass. Heute in den grossen Sammlungen der Welt verstreut, werden die wichtigsten Werke nun erstmals in einer grossen Überblickschau gezeigt. Beiträge namhafter Experten zeigen, wie sich der Künstler mit ausgeprägtem Instinkt für den Kunstmarkt zunehmend an der italienischen Malerei, besonders an Leonardo da Vinci, orientierte ein früher Beleg für den grossen Einfluss der italienischen Hochrenaissance auf den Norden Europas.
