Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Police Bureau is taking a vacation, in part because he is annoyed at his boss, the Party Secretary, but also because he has been made an offer he can't refuse by a triad-connected businessman. For what seems to be a fortune-with no apparent strings attached-he is to translate into English a business proposal for the New World, a complex of shops and restaurants to be built in Central Shanghai evoking nostalgia for the "glitter and glamour" of the '30s. So Detective Yu, Chen's partner, is forced to take charge of a new investigation. A novelist has been murdered in her room. At first it seems that only a neighbor could have committed the crime, but when one confesses, Detective Yu cannot believe that he is really the murderer. As the policeman looks further, ample motives begin to surface, even on the part of Internal Security. But it is only when Inspector Chen steps back into the investigation that the real culprit is apprehended. And then Chen discovers how the triad has played him

"The system has no place for a cop who puts justice above the interests of the Party. It's a miracle that I survived as long as I did." *** For years, Chen Cao managed to balance the interests of the Communist Party and the promises made by his job. He was both a Chief Inspector of Special Investigations of the Shanghai Police Department and the deputy party secretary of the bureau. He was considered a potential rising star in the Party until, after one too many controversial cases that embarrassed powerful elements in the Party, Chen Cao found himself neutralized. Under the guise of a brilliant promotion, to a new position with no power, he's stripped of his titles and his job duties, discredited and isolated. But that's still not enough, as it becomes increasingly clear that someone is attempting to have him killed--and quietly. Chen Cao is technically in charge of the corruption case of a "Red Prince"--A powerful, high Party figure who embodies the ruthless ambition, greed, and corruption that is increasingly evident in the new China. With no power, few allies, and with his own reputation and life on the line, the former Inspector Chen is facing the most dangerous case of his career"--
Years of Red Dust : stories of Shanghai by Xiaolong Qiu( Book )

6 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Published originally in the pages of Le Monde, this collection of linked short stories by Qiu Xiaolong has already been a major bestseller in France (Cite de la Poussiere Rouge) and Germany (Das Tor zur Roten Gasse), where it and the author was the subject of a major television documentary. These stories trace the changes in modern China over fifty years - from the early days of the Communist revolution in 1949 to the modernization movement of the late ninties - all from the perspective of one small street in Shanghai, Red Dust Lane. From the early optimism of the end of the Chinese Civil War, through the brutality and upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, to the death of Mao, the pro-democracy movement and the riots in Tiananmen Square - through the bulletins posted and the lives lived in this one lane, this one corner of Shanghai

Treasury of Chinese love poems : in Chinese and English = [Zhongguo gu dian ai qing shi xuan]( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Qiu Xiaolong is extravagantly qualified for translating these poems, having as a citizen of China won prizes for his own poetry and for translating T.S. Eliot and other English and American poets into Chinese and, more recently, as a citizen of the United States, won prizes for his own poetry and fiction in English. To my mind, the Changgan Song in this collection rivals Ezra Pound's justly famous, loosely translated version, The River Merchant's Wife. These renderings have a limpidity of the language and metaphor and a subtle rhythm, and Qiu has a poet's sixth sense for when (occasionally) to lift the line with a less direct and more evocative word; we are thus rescued from the flatness of some translations of early Chinese poetry. This is a generous book and a very welcome addition to the poetry of love and longing from our Significant Stranger, the Chinese nation. --Mona Van Duyn
