Raphael : from Urbino to Rome by Hugo Chapman( Book )

14 editions published in 2004 in English and German and held by 1,014 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Within little more than a decade Raffaello di Giovanni Santi (1483-1520) transformed himself from a master of provincial church decoration to one of the greatest painters who ever lived. This illustrated catalogue tells the story of his artistic journey from Urbino, where he was born, to the papal court in Rome, via the Central Italian cities of Citta di Castello, Perugia, Siena and Florence." "This book follows this dramatic evolution from his origins in Urbino and the early influences of his father, Giovanni Santi, and the famous Umbrian master Pietro Perugino. It explores his earliest works in Umbria and his studies in Florence under the influence of Leonardo and Michelangelo, concluding by investigating how and why Raphael's art flourished and changed so dramatically under the enlightened patronage of Pope Julius II in Rome."--Jacket

Raphael : cartoons and tapestries for the Sistine Chapel by Raphael( Book )

7 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In September 2010, the V & A will show four of the ten tapestries Raphael designed for the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. These remarkable works are comparable with Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Ceiling as masterpieces of High Renaissance art and, in a unique exhibition, will be displayed with the full-size designs Raphael made for them - the famous Cartoons, which have been on display in the V & A since 1865. This book introduces and contextualizes the cartoons and the tapestries made from them. It looks at how and why they were made, before discussing each subject individually in terms of sources and composition. Accessible and beautiful, it will be essential reading for all Raphael and Renaissance enthusiasts"--Provided by publisher

Raphael's "School of Athens" by Arnold Nesselrath( Book )

12 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Raphael's "School of Athens" examines one of the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance and the artist's best-known work. Commissioned by Pope Julius II to decorate the walls of his private library, the fresco represents the gathering of the philosophers of the ancient world around the central figures of Plato and Aristotle. The adjacent walls represent theologians, poets, and lawgivers, the subjects of books in Julius's library. Presented in this volume are early cricitisms of the fresco by Bellori and Wolfflin, along with new interpretations, published in this volume for the first time, of its iconography in relation to the other frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura and in the context of humanism and the rhetorical tradition of the papal court; analysis of Raphael's groundbreaking use of light and color; and an inquiry into the role of Bramante and antique architecture in Raphael's design. An introduction surveys the critical history of Raphael and the painting, and the history of modern interpretations."--Jacket

The Pauline Chapel( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Pauline Chapel, the private chapel of the Apostolic Palaces, built in 1537 at the behest of Paul III, has been reopened for worship with the solemn Vespers celebrated by Benedict XVI. This volume, available in five languages, accurately describes all the phases of the complex restoration works which began in 2002 with the preliminary scientific and archival research, and which have restored the Chapel to the best visual conditions possible, thus enabling a more advanced understanding of its historical, iconographic and stylistic value. Introduced by Benedict XVI's homily, which inaugurated the laborious restoration work carried out during the summer of 2009, and preceded with an interview with the Director of the Vatican Museums, Antonio Paolucci, the focus of the volume is the essay by Arnold Nesselrath examining the meaning and significance of the wall paintings (by Michelangelo, Lorenzo Sabbatini and Zuccari), revealing also the perfect coherence of the iconographic system with the functions assumed by the place. An art historical perspective is followed by an outline of the phases of the restoration project, faithful in its principles and intentions to the history of the Chapel. Maurizio De Luca then illustrates the methods of intervention used and Ulderico Santamaria presents the results of the scientific analyses. An appendix dedicated to the liturgical furnishings of the Pauline Chapel concludes the volume. Numerous images and tipped-in colour plates, linked to the essays, illustrate the development of the restoration works through images showing the chapel "before" and "after" intervention."--Publisher's description
