The Veddas by C. G Seligman( Book )

28 editions published between 1911 and 2010 in English and held by 534 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dr C. G. Seligmann (1873-1940) was a renowned anthropologist who was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute between 1923 and 1925. After joining the Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Strait in Melanesia in 1898, he changed his career from medicine to anthropology and began his career as a distinguished field anthropologist. This book contains his pioneering ethnology of the indigenous Vedda people of Sri Lanka. The social, political, religious and economic life of the Veddas is systematically examined in this detailed study, first published as part of the Cambridge Archaeological and Ethnological Series in 1911. This ethnology remains the standard reference work for the social structure and material culture of the Vedda people, as they have ceased to exist as a separate community in Sri Lanka. This volume contains views on ethnicity which were acceptable at the time it was published
A text-book of experimental psychology with laboratory exercises by Charles S Myers( Book )

103 editions published between 1909 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 530 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For some time past the lack of a Text-book on Experimental Psychology has been keenly felt. The literature of the subject is now so scattered and so profuse, that a student must have at his command a small library of books and periodicals if he wishes to pursue a course of independent reading. In endeavouring to supply this want, I do not attempt to offer a "systematic" Psychology. On the contrary, I assume that the student is already familiar with the elements of general psychology. He may have had the opportunity of attending an introductory course of lectures on the subject which were accompanied by demonstrations, and in that case he will have observed how artificial is the line of cleavage between general and experimental psychology. I assume, too, that he does not approach the detailed study of experimental psychology in ignorance of the general structure and functions of the nervous system. In the following pages I may appear at times to have laid undue stress on purely physiological and physical considerations in their relation to the problems of experimental psychology. But the ultimate object, which has influenced me throughout, has been to describe the of psychological experiment, and to set forth the most important results that have been obtained in this field of research"--Preface. 44 editions published between 1911 and 2012 in English and held by 229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In writing this little book, I have tried to keep in mind the purpose of the series to which it belongs. Having selected various topics which may fairly be considered typical themes of research in Experimental Psychology, I have endeavoured to present them in such a form as will give the educated reader a general notion of the scope of the science and of the experimental methods it employs. Of course these various topics will not appeal in equal degrees to different interests"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Vedda : AX05( )

in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection consists of three documents, all in English, containing information about the Vedda during three periods of time: 1850s, mid-1910s, and late 1960s. The first comprehensive ethnographic account of Vedda in this collection was compiled by C.G. Seligmann and B.Z. Seligmann. It provides a first hand account of Vedda kinship, village life, economic activities, settlement patterns, life cycles, religion, music, language and perceptions as observed in 1907-1908. Seligmanns's account is supplemented by James Brow's study of kinship and caste system among the Vedda of Anuradhapura district in the Northern Central Province of Sri Lanka. The remaining book in the collection was authored by John Bailey, a British colonial government official, and he covers a variety of information relating to settlement pattern, economic activities and religion. The Vedda are a small group of indigenous people living in the center of Sri Lanka, an island off the southern tip of India
