Covers the march of the American force under Baron de Kalb from Morristown, N.J. to South Carolina. The troops left on April 16 and arrived at Buffalo Run in July

Concerning the commission promised to him but not approved in Congress; saying " ... I repeat once more that if Congress or Some of their Members were in the least Distress of removing any uneasiness my Stay should give to whomsoever, I would decline the favours Congress have a mind to confer on me. I would have nobody displeased for my Sake. It may perhaps seem odd, that I do not reside at yorktown, and sue in Person for an answer from Congress, to my letters to Colonel Lee of 18th September and 2nd October. But I would not be charged, in case I was to stay, of having Sollicited the influence of friends to be employed."

Dealer feels that this letter is almost certainly to George Washington, as Kalb addresses the recipient throughout as "Your Excellency." Letter concerns a dispute between Major Adams and Captain Levin Winder of the Maryland troops, who later became Governor of Maryland. There is discussion of a possible court martial for Winder at this time. Kalb was serving as second in command to Lafayette in the Fall of 1778
