The volume is marked as an accounts current ledger of E. I. du Pont. It has been erroneously attributed to du Pont's sometime partner, Peter Bauduy, but much of the writing is in du Pont's own hand. The volume records a number of family and company expenses, particularly the raising of merino sheep, the operations of the merino farm and the Newport farm, house expenses, and the boarding of hands. There are accounts with a number of local firms in which du Pont was either a member or drew on for supplies.

The personal correspondence relates to both personal and business matters. Prior to E. I. du Pont's arrival in America in 1800 it includes letters concerning the career of his father and brother. After 1800, much of it concerns the founding and operation of the powder mills on the Brandywine. There are references to French and American politics, as well as to Thomas Jefferson's criticism of Napoleon in 1812, and the visit of Lafayette to the United States in 1824.

This collection contains several reports and notes on gunpowder, powder mills and saltpeter that Eleuthère Irénée du Pont wrote while he was a pupil of Lavoiser in France. These include: (1) "Mémoire sur la poudre" (36 pp.), dealing with the composition, utility, principles, and the manufacture of powder, with reference to the six types of powder manufactured in France; (2) "Mémoire sur la construction des moulins à poudre" (42 pp.) which deals with construction, maintenance, and specification and assembly of parts of a mill; (3)"Mémoire sur le salpêtre. This last memoir summarizes contemporary knowledge of the composition of chemical salts and technique employed by the French government in the manufacture of gunpowder. Also included are pencil notes on gunpowder manufacture taken from the published text of Louis Joseph Proust (1754-1826).

This collection of the papers of E. I. du Pont was amassed by his descendant, Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954). The main body of E. I. du Pont's papers descended through Henry Algernon du Pont to Henry Francis du Pont and now forms part of the Hagley Museum & Library's Winterthur Manuscripts.
