Johan Zoffany, 1733-1810 by Mary Webster( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 338 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Universally recognised as a brilliant and gifted eighteenth-century artist, Zoffany was regarded by Horace Walpole as one of the three greatest painters in England, along with his friends Reynolds and Gainsborough. He has remained without a detailed study of his life and works owing to the fascinating and complex vicissitudes of his career, now established from widely scattered sources. Starting out as a late-baroque painter at a German princely court, he moved to London in 1760 and soon became a leading portraitist. A loyal patron was the great actor David Garrick through whom Zoffany became admired as the unrivalled interpreter of the Georgian stage. The delightful inventions of his conversation pieces proved, then as now, fashionably successful images of private lives and led to his swift rise into the royal patronage of George III and Queen Charlotte. Zoffany set foot in so many worlds that their contrast alone gives a constantly changing interest to the history of his life and work
The French Revolution as blasphemy : Johan Zoffany's paintings of the massacre at Paris, August 10, 1792 by William L Pressly( Book )

2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From his profoundly conservative point of view, the Revolution turned "rightful" hierarchies upside down - the domination of men over women, of whites over blacks, of aristocrats over the rest of society, and Christianity over atheism and blasphemy. Zoffany's paintings, Pressly shows, have a religious dimension that transforms them, giving them a higher symbolic purpose. By alluding in them to such sacred subjects as the Crucifixion, the Massacre of the Innocents, and the Last Supper, Zoffany broke new ground, conveying Christian themes in a radically new format

Anecdotes of George Frederick Handel, and John Christopher Smith. With select pieces of music, composed by J.C. Smith, never before published by William Coxe( Book )

1 edition published in 1799 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author and clergyman William Coxe (1748-1828), noted for his travel works, was the stepson of Handel's amanuensis, German-born John Christopher Smith (1712-95). First published in 1799, the present work is a valuable source of first-hand information about two men at the heart of eighteenth-century English music: George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), whose inventive and sensitive melodic genius and exuberant brilliance in depicting the spectacular are best displayed in his Messiah and Zadok the Priest, and Smith, a composer of attractive and fashionable music, who settled in London in 1720, took lessons with Handel and later supported the great composer as his eyesight failed. Smith was also organist at the Foundling Hospital until 1770. This publication, profits from which were intended to support Smith's family, draws on the works of John Hawkins and Charles Burney, and on anecdotes claimed to be 'derived from unquestionable authority'
