Preston Dickinson, an American modernist : with a catalogue of selected works by Richard Lee Rubenfeld( )

1 edition published in 1985 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This dissertation is a study of the life and work of Preston Dickinson, one of the leading Precisionists. Because of this group's ability to integrate pristine style with subjects that related to it--factories, granaries, still lifes of man-made objects--the Precisionists generally have been viewed as the first major unified movement in modern American art of the 20th century. Dickinson was one of the first to work in this precise style, in scenes of Harlem River bridges and other marine architecture of 1915, and was one of the first to promote the kind of imagery that became central to Precisionism. Yet, although it is generally acknowledged that Precisionism was a major trend--in a sense a compromise between realism and abstraction--it has been viewed too narrowly. It was not the classicism per se that made the Precisionists' works continuously interesting; rather, it was their varied explorations beyond classicism
